Welcome to the Cherokee Blog! The public is invited to come and see Cherokee being built on site. The entire construction process will be on display, and visitors can watch the boat grow from the initial lofting through framing, planking, and final finishing. The team of four shipwrights includes three IYRS graduates, led by David Stimson of Boothbay Harbor Shipyard. Construction is expected to continue through November. For those unable to come to the museum, we will be using this blog to document the process with photos and commentary.
This project is a collaboration between the Museum of Yachting and Boothbay Harbor Shipyard. The shipyard is donating all the wood for this venture along with the services of master shipwright David Stimson. We couldn't be happier to have their sponsorship for this project.
About the shipwrights: Project leader David Stimson is the general manager of Boothbay Harbor Shipyard. He recently oversaw the rebuild of the 108' topsail schooner, Shenandoa. If you know Michael Ruhlman's book "Wooden Boats," you may remember that David led the crew that built Rebecca along with Nat Benjamin. Robin Oblesbee-Venghaus graduated from IYRS in 2005. He has worked as a shipwright since graduation, and most recently has taken on the first year instructor duties at IYRS while the regular instructor is on maternity leave. Karl Cressotti and Tom Daniels are both members of the 2008 graduating class at IYRS. Karl was profiled in the Spring 2007 issue of Restoration Quarterly. Tom is the author of the blog A Shipwright in Training which details his progress through the IYRS program.
