The deck hardware, winches, etc are slowly getting put on Cherokee.  The other day, we had to load everything she'd have in her during a race onto the boat for the official weighing.

So, all the sails, boxes of uninstalled hardware, a little anchor (yes, it's required!) all got piled in, and then she was put in slings

and lifted clear of the water.

There's an electronic scale in between the hook up top and the big oval ring that wireless displays the boat's weight to the official on the ground.  We came in at 3885 kg (I think I'm remembering this is right, but given the state of my memory post 50, it's subject to confirmation) and I believe that's within our design estimate.

But then we got a tow out into the harbor with some of the syndicate members and David Stimson... and all those numbers went away.

We were particularly fortunate to have Hank Thayer, our sailmaker and expert six-metre racer along for the ride to help us tune things.  That's him in the sun glasses on the left.  He was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful.

So we learned a lot, but mostly just had fun.

She looked amazing.

The next two days she sailed solidly in the 155th Annual New York Yacht Club Regatta and despite not having the spinnaker set up and being sailed very conservatively as we started to learn how she felt, she did pretty dang well.

She's a fast boat, no doubt about it.

More later...

So what is next for Tom

Tom

A great job well done
I have very much enjoyed your blogs since I stumbled upon them back in ‘Shipwright in Training’ days, so thanks for the escape from my humdrum.
Now that this project is wrapped / wrapping up what is next for you. I am looking forward to reading the blogs.

Re: A few photos of Cherokee on the water

Thanks Joe,
A wrap up entry is coming soon with a few more pics. As far as writing goes, after this I might just bring Shipwright in Training back from the limbo where it's languished over the past year. I've also been doing the blog for IYRS at iyrs.org. As far as boat work goes, I've been working steadily down in Mystic CT on a Herreshoff NY 50 with the folks at McClave, Philbrick and Giblin since January and will remain there for the foreseeable future. Hmmm, might be a good idea to put a "where are they now?" paragraph in the sum up of the projects here...

And if you're the same Joe Walsh that plays guitar... I loved Barnstorm.

Nice pictures, nice job, Tom.
Are the winches in solid brass or brass looking aluminium?
I believe the 3885 kg Chereokee is weighing now will a bit increase even if she is stored on a birth, that I guess not while seeing her antifouling paint.

Re: A few photos of Cherokee on the water

Oh those puppies are SOLID winches by LVJ www.lvjwinchesusa.com/. She'll be moored at the Museum of Yachting's basin for the foreseeable future, so she'll stay wet. You're right about the paint though, it's tough tough stuff. The boat is drum tight, so the only water that's getting in is through humidity and rain.

Hi,

Im very interested in building a 6 metre class yacht similar to this, and would be very interested to hear where you got the plans for her :)

Thanks.
